Recently, the research field "Environmental Forensics" is being developed. When the incident using chemical compounds occurred, pollution sources of harmful compounds in complex environments are estimated by using various analyzers and statistics, such as criminal investigation which investigate by the criminal statue and the criminal motives from material evidence and circumstantial evidence, For environmental risk assessment, it is most important to estimate the source. If can’t, we will do the wrong measures forever, and which will cost huge expenses.
In Japan, environmental forensics research hasn’t been conducted yet, and we have set up a laboratory in Akita prefectural university. In particular, we are currently conducting environmental forensics research using stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry.
